Meet to Meet the SDG "Why business should love the forest"
Meet to Meet the SDG - CSR Calendar Forum on Business and the Forest is a joint action of CSR Project and UN - REDD Programme Vietnam.
Covering one third of the Earth’s land mass, forests are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than 80% of the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. They also provide shelter, jobs and security for forest-dependent communities.
In accordance with Global Forests Report 2016 by CDP, 24% companies state that on average, a quarter of their revenues depend on commodities linked to forest: cattle, palm oil, soy and timber. While 81% of companies which sit at the top of global commodity supply chains, have experienced impacts related to forest-risk commodities that have resulted in substantive changes to operations, revenue or expenditure in the past five years. Our breathing, drinking, source of materials and pocket somehow connect to forest!
This Meet to Meet the SDG - CSR Calendar Forum is a joint action of CSR Project and UN - REDD Programme Vietnam in order to promote business sector’s mindfulness of the multiple ways forests can benefit their business.
Around 150 participants came to the Forum, representing business community, organizations, research and educational institutes showing their interest and love to the forest. The event also welcomed UN Resident Coordinator to Vietnam – Mr. Kamal Malhotra, Her Excellency Ms. Siren Gjerme Eriksen, Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Viet Nam and Dr. Nguyen Van Ha, Deputy General Director of the Viet Nam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST).
Participants spent the afternoon on UNIDO SDG marketplace - Forest in my business, self-evaluating the role of forest to business activities and business impacts on SDG goals. The result reflected their thinking of the forest and their measures/methods for "better forest", including direct and indirect ones.
